Converting Equipment & Web Handling Solutions

Versatile Equipment for Precision Performance

Web quality and consistent performance depends on how well substrates interact with rolls, and the precision of the machinery that guides the process. PRS has a wide variety of equipment available to address any production or application challenge, all backed by the insights and experience of a team dedicated to building primary converting equipment and web handling solutions that deliver.

FAQs about Converting Equipment

What types of web converting machinery does Precision Roll Solutions (PRS) build?

PRS designs and builds custom web converting and web handling equipment, including primary converting equipment, slitters & rewinders, custom embossers, custom calenders, and Webco two-drum winders for winding and slitting applications.

How do I choose between primary converting equipment, slitters/rewinders, embossers/calenders, and two-drum winders?

Choose based on the outcome you need:

  • Primary converting equipment: custom equipment for web handling and converting tasks (unwinds, winders, and configurable converting stations).
  • Slitters/rewinders: cut parent reels into the widths you need with controlled tension and edge quality.
  • Embossers/calenders: apply controlled nip pressure for embossing texture, bonding, or calendering/finishing.
  • Two-drum winders: high-performance winding and slitting/rewinding configurations for paper-making and converting operations, including above-the-floor designs that do not require a pit.
What materials, web widths, and line speeds can PRS machinery support?

Capabilities vary by application, but PRS builds custom equipment for pulp, tissue, paperboard, and nonwoven materials with web widths from 60 inches to over 300 inches and line speeds up to 8,000 feet per minute (process-dependent). PRS also lists equipment capability examples such as custom embossers with speeds up to 3,000 FPM, custom calenders with calendering speeds up to 6,000 FPM, and Webco two-drum models with maximum machine speeds up to 6,000–7,000 FPM depending on model.

What is center-surface winding, and when should I use it?

Center-surface winding drives the rewind roll from both the core and the surface. PRS notes this provides the greatest tension range and supports slitting close to the rewind point, enabling thin slits with excellent edge quality—useful when running a wide range of materials and tension requirements.

What winding and unwind options are available—and how do they impact tension control and edge quality?

PRS/REM slitter & rewinder systems can be configured for center-surface winding, center winding, or other winding methods depending on the material. PRS also notes that center winding is often paired with differential shafts (to transmit torque evenly despite diameter differences) and can be well-suited for high-speed film processing, while unwind stands can be configured with brakes or motors and integrated tension control using load cells or dancer feedback.

Can PRS build embossing and calendering equipment for new lines or retrofit into an existing converting line?

Yes. PRS builds custom embossers for new builds and integration into existing converting lines (including options like heated or chilled rollers, PLC/HMI controls, single or tandem stations, and pneumatic or hydraulic loading). PRS also designs custom calender systems with options like pneumatic or hydraulic nip loading, gap control, roll skew control, heated/chilled roll options, and PLC/HMI-controlled operation.

What information should I provide to quote a new machine, upgrade, or retrofit?

For the fastest, most accurate quote, share:

  • Your process goal (slitting/rewinding, embossing, calendering/finishing, winding/unwinding, etc.)
  • Substrate/material type and key specs (web width, basis weight/gsm range, thickness range if applicable)
  • Speed target and tension range requirements
  • Unwind and rewind roll sizes (max diameters) and core sizes
  • Number of slits / finished roll widths (for slitting/rewinding)
  • Facility constraints (footprint, pit vs above-the-floor preference, material handling constraints)
  • Controls/automation needs (PLC/HMI integration, operator interface, monitoring/data needs)

PRS engineers typically review these requirements with you before finalizing an optimized design.

I already own Webco equipment—can PRS support service, parts, audits, maintenance, and upgrades?

Yes. PRS announced it acquired specific assets of Webco Engineering on December 30, 2024, and PRS later published that former Webco customers can direct inquiries to PRS for service, spare parts, audits, maintenance/upgrades, and technical assistance, and that Webco solutions are now part of PRS’s product and service offerings.
